Upcoming talks from The Arts Society Cranleigh

The Arts Society Cranleigh has published its latest programme for the coming months.

On Wednesday 23rd February 2022, the Arts Society Cranleigh presents BRUEGHEL, THE SEASONS AND THE WORLD

We welcome Gavin Plumley back to talk to us about Brueghel who in 1565 was commissioned to create a series of paintings for a dining room in Antwerp.

The images, charting the course of a year, changed the way we view the world through art.

This lecture explores how Brueghel pioneered a whole new way of thinking about the environment and our individual places within a shifting cosmos.

The AGM will take place at 7.15 p.m. prior to the evening talk in February.

On Wednesday 24th March 2022 it’s JEWELLERY FROM DOWNTON TO GATSBY

Andrew Prince is a jewellery craftsman and historian. He was commissioned to make several pieces of jewellery for the Downton Abbey series.

In his talk, Andrew guides you through the extraordinary periods and events between 1890 and 1929, where the great Couturiers collaborated with the finest jewellers to produce jewels of outstanding quality and glittering opulence.

And then on Wednesday 27th April 2022, WRITERS AND RELICS – A BRIEF HISTORY OF LITERARY TOURISM

What is it that makes us so interested in seeing where great literature began?

This fascinating lecture by Annalie Talent takes us on a journey through the history of literary tourism in the UK.

Beginning in Stratford in the 18th century with the cult of Shakespeare, we move north to Scotland and then end with the founding of museums dedicated to Wordsworth, the Brontes and Jane Austen.

Non-members are welcome to join a Talk as a guest. There is no commitment, but a donation is appreciated. Please contact: membership@theartssocietycranleigh.org
