The Prudential RideLondon 2020 event has been cancelled.
London authorities took the decision after engaging with those responsible for planning the cycling event.
The decision to cancel is fully supported by Surrey County Council; the event was scheduled to pass through Surrey on Sunday 16th August 2020.
With a large number of participants due to take part, as well as spectators and key workers on the ground managing logistics, Surrey County Council prioritised the health and safety of Surrey residents and concluded the event was unsafe.
The council remains committed to hosting future Prudential Ride London-Surrey events, from 2021 onwards.
They will review operationally how the impact of the coronavirus will affect the mechanics of hosting a mass participation event of this scale.
These implications should become more evident as the legacy of the coronavirus and its impact on society is better understood.
A Surrey County Council cabinet decision on whether the event can continue to pass through Surrey beyond 2021 still needs to be made.
This decision was due to be reviewed at a cabinet meeting in April, but will now be decided in July.
Surrey County Council’s consultation asked for views from local residents on whether Surrey should continue to host the event.
More than 9,000 people answered the survey, with 80% saying they either lived or worked in Surrey.
The results of that survey will be used to inform the July Cabinet decision, and those results will be shared as part of the associated Cabinet report.
Hugh Brasher Event Director of Prudential RideLondon said:
We know that there will be many, many questions from riders, charities and others and we ask you to please bear with us as we work through all the detail. We expect to be in a position to provide full updates to participants and charities by the middle of June. We will also post regular updates on our website and social media channels.
