Cranleigh world record attempt with painted pebbles

An official world record attempt is coming to the village on Saturday 27th April as the centre-piece of the annual Spring into Cranleigh event.

Cranleigh Chamber of Commerce, organisers of the village-wide shopping event, have registered an application with Guinness World Records to win the title of “Largest display of painted pebbles/stones”.

This record attempt was inspired by the success of the Cranleigh Rocks group, started by Cranleigh in Bloom last year. Membership of the group on Facebook has quickly grown to nearly 1,000 local people who take part in the game by decorating, hiding and finding painted pebbles around the village.

Cranleigh in Bloom chairman Martin Bamford said:

With the village reaching the finals of RHS Britain in Bloom this year, we wanted to celebrate the achievement in a big way. Guinness World Records have asked us to beat a target of 1,150 painted pebbles in order to set the record, which is a huge goal.

As well as asking our existing group of pebble painters to get involved, we’re urging anyone with some creative flair to bring their decorated rocks along to Spring into Cranleigh on Saturday 27th April. Come and find us in Fountain Square, where our volunteers will add your painted pebbles to the display as we attempt to create a new world record for Cranleigh.

The official record is for the greatest number of painted pebbles or stones in one display at a single venue. The record attempt will take place in Fountain Square, with volunteers from Cranleigh Chamber of Commerce and Cranleigh in Bloom placing painted pebbles in the display.

For the purpose of this record, a painted pebble or stone is a stone or pebble which has been covered with paint and depicts an image or pattern. Suitably qualified judges will be on hand to verify each painted pebble and stone claimed in the display.

Ahead of the record attempt, the organisers are encouraging local artists and craftspeople to start decorating pebbles, ready to add to the display on the day. There’s more information in the Cranleigh Rocks Facebook Group at facebook.com/groups/cranleighrocks.

In addition to the world record attempt, Spring into Cranleigh will feature an Italian market in Fountain Square, live music, food stalls and promotions from High Street retailers. Spring into Cranleigh 2019 is generously sponsored by Hans Christmas Andersen.

Cranleigh Chamber of Commerce has been representing the local business community since 1948 and draws its members from all sectors ranging from large companies to sole traders and retired individuals. To find out more, please visit www.cranleighbiz.co.uk.
