Here’s what to expect from The Arts Society Cranleigh in the next few months

Harry Venning presents THE ART OF THE CARTOONIST

There is a packed programme of talks coming from The Arts Society Cranleigh in May, June and July 2022.

On Wednesday 25th May, Harry Venning presents THE ART OF THE CARTOONIST.

Harry has been a professional cartoonist for thirty years. He has provided cartoons to several high profile publications and others less well known.

He will be tracing the history of his profession with examples from early practitioners like Cruikshank and Hogarth to more contemporary artists such as Giles and Schulz and will bring events right up to date with cartoons produced fresh on the page on this day!

Wednesday 22nd June features LAND OF THE MONKEY GOD – THE ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF SRI LANKA, with Georgina Bexon.

Georgina is an art historian specialising in South Asian art. Shrines, stupas, cave temples, colonial grandeur and modernist architecture – a look at the history of this beautiful island through its intriguing art and culture.

This talk examines the fascinating story of Sri Lankan art and the original minds, talents and spirits that created this unique visual world.

On Wednesday 27 July, Jacky Klein presents CEZANNE – THE (UNLIKELY) FATHER OF MODERN ART.

Jacky is an art historian, publisher, writer and broadcaster, specialising in modern and contemporary art.

During this talk, we will be introduced to Cezanne through his work of the 1880s, 90s and early 1900s during which time he began a revolution in painting, creating what the art historian Ernst Gombrich called ‘a landslide in art’.

Non-members are welcome to join talks as a guest. There is no commitment to join, but a donation is appreciated.
